What is Pilates?
Pilates is a physical fitness system that focuses particularly on building up core strength and stability, to help improve general fitness in an even way. Similar to yoga studios in Cheltenham, Pilates classes are done on a mat and often in a group setting. In some cases, it can also be done using special equipment including a Wunda Chair, Cadillac or the Reformer, which add resistance through the use of pulleys and springs, straps and handles.
Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates and it was influenced by western exercise, such as gymnastics, Greco-Roman wrestling and boxing. When Pilates immigrated to the USA during the 1920s, he opened the world’s first Pilates studio in New York, where he taught his method that he called “Contrology” for many decades.
Why is Pilates great for everyone?
Pilates can offer a great way to get toned and develop strength in a way that suits all ages and physical fitness levels, from those getting back into a fitness routine, to top athletes. Pilates can help you to improve your posture, muscle tone, joint mobility, and balance and it can also help to relieve tension and stress. It’s a very calming form of exercise that is very popular with people around the world.
Pilates is also a fantastic way to gently ease yourself back into exercise after having a baby or if you’re recovering from an injury. This is because the poses help to reduce the risk of injury and are very low-impact compared to more energetic forms of exercise such as rowing, cycling, Zumba, running and boxing. There’s even encouraging evidence to suggest that regular Pilates practice can help you reduce back pain.
Another wonder of Pilates is that it can help you manage your weight due to the muscle-strengthening qualities of this form of exercise. Most Pilates classes will vary in intensity, so make sure you ask the instructor at the Spirit Health Club at Holiday Inn Gloucester Cheltenham, to find out if the class is going to be gentle or more dynamic. This will allow you to choose the class that best suits your abilities and fitness goals.
After you’ve spent time in one of our Pilates classes, you can treat yourself to a healthy and tasty meal or snack in our hotel restaurant and bar, or you can even take it back to your hotel room to enjoy later.
