Things to do in Gloucester

The Holiday Inn Gloucester-Cheltenham is conveniently located just off the M5, only two miles from Gloucester's city centre and six miles from Cheltenham. It’s an ideal location for families because we are so close to many wonderful attractions.

Events and attractions

With their distinct personalities, the spa town of Cheltenham and the Roman city of Gloucester both have much to offer. In Gloucester, be sure to visit Gloucester Docks, where you can find a remarkably complete example of a Victorian inland port. Here you will enjoy the visiting and historic moored boats, and see restored warehouses and buildings that are home to a number of restaurants, cafes, and even a microbrewery. Visit the National Waterways Museum for interactive displays and free craft activities for families. If you have more time, you can book a guided tour or plan a trip on the canal or the River Severn.

For another watery adventure, visit Slimbridge Wetland Centre. This is a wonderful sanctuary for native, visiting and exotic wild birds just half an hour away on the Severn Estuary. Slimbridge runs a year-round programme of walks, activities and events, including 'canoe safaris' and an annual puddle-jumping competition. The centre is home to resident water voles, otters, and even exotic flamingos. There are 13 hides from which to view the 30,000 overwintering birds, and you can feed the rarest goose in the world. Sudeley Castle & Gardens, in the Cotswolds, is also about 30 minutes' drive from the hotel, and boasts extensive gardens and an interesting folklore. The ghost of Katherine Parr, Henry VIII's last wife, is rumoured to haunt the castle.

Other nationally-famous locations which shouldn't be missed if you are planning a longer stay include the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean, where you can enjoy beautiful scenery, find many unique craft shops, cafes and museums, and learn about the rich cultural and natural histories of the area.

As well as having a thriving commercial centre with many unique shops, Cheltenham is rich in cultural life, with its literary, music and science festivals, its art museum and the refurbished Everyman Theatre. In March, the town is host to the extravaganza that is the Gold Cup Day at Cheltenham Racecourse.

Attractions in Gloucester

Also nearby in the Cotswolds are the remains of a Roman villa in Great Witcombe. Set in a peaceful location on the Cotswolds Way, the villa was once part of an opulent estate with wonderful views and the remains of a bathhouse complex.

Gloucester cathedral is one of the most exquisite medieval buildings in the country, and it boasts of the few monarch's tomb's outside of London - that of King Edward II. You can also enjoy the beautiful stained glass, join a tour of the crypt, or visit the rooftop for spectacular views. In the summer, Gloucester cathedral is one of the hosts of the Three Choirs Festival.

Finally, if you're a rugby fan you'll be familiar with Kingsholm Stadium in Gloucester, the home of Gloucester Rugby and a venue for the Rugby World Cup in 2016. You might not know that the stadium is also an international music venue when the season ends.
